I hate that term...re-skinning. In fact I'm surprised that its use is even entertained at Huge.

There are a number of issues to consider:
1. Its never as simple as just 'change the stylesheet'
2. It opens the door to scope-creep (Oh and while you're changing red text to green could you just throw in an image...it'll only take 5 minutes etc etc)
3. It affects billing and client perceptions (How come you can do a re-skin in a week, yet a new site is 9 months?)
4. It gives the client an out (Great re-skin there, think I'll cancel the 9 month project...after all it looks good and who gives a damn about things like user experience anyway)

'Re-skin' denigrates design and fuels the misconception that a 'pretty' site will get ROI. Just as in architecture where the design of a structure is about so much more than its exterior appearance, so too for websites where design is interwoven with user experience and content.

Mark Hurst makes another good point about Google+: It's not really solving any of the problems that Facebook has, namely.. how do you manage the INBOUND flood of posts/information/etc. Read more here: http://goodexperience.com/2011/07/why-google-will-succe.php

I agree with Rachel above. The problem with Google+'s Circles is the same problem with Facebook's Groups: explicitly managing your social relationships and mapping them out is tedious. It feels like homework. In real life we do it implicitly and often. Also, mapping them out using either tool may lead to stereotyping, whereas in life these relationships may change and be refined with each interaction.

Google's offering would be more compelling if it sought to address that problem, with an automatic, algorithmic solution, as is being attempted by startups like Katango: http://www.businessinsider.com/startup-katango-organizes-facebook-groups-2011-7

To the Circles argument, Oliver, I think you make a good point--in theory, it really doesn't seem that hard to make and manage them. But I think this process happens more naturally offline than online, because is operates almost on a subconscious level. Forcing users to actively draw distinctions in the digital space by figuring out who belongs where was almost perceived as "work" for them, or at least requiring a good deal of effort that many aren't used to doing on a regular basis.
Plus, on Google+ (no pun intended!), there's no limit to the number of people you can add to your circles (at least, no apparent restrictions as of now). And, the one-way nature of relationships means there's no need to have any restraint with who you include in your Circles--there's no self-consciousness, or having to think "Gee, if I reach out to this person, they'll have to accept my request, which might make me reconsider my offer since I don't really know them and they might question why I'm trying to establish this digital connection." So arguably there can be a lot more people to "manage" in your Circles than in other social media networks, and these people can all differ in their relation to you. Constantly having to think about and parse out those distinctions could be mentally exhausting.
